Sodium xylenesulfonate is a hydrotropic substance used as a coupling agent, viscosity modifier, solubilizer and cloud point and crystallization temperature depressant in liquid cleaning, washing and laundry detergents, wax strippers, metalworking cleaners etc.

Sodium xylenesulfonate is one of the most commonly used hydrotropes, ie. agents allowing dissolution of molecules of compounds that are normally insoluble. Sodium xylenesulfonate is employed in the formulations of liquid all-purpose cleaners, dishwashing liquids, heavy duty cleaners and as a non-caking agent in spray dried detergents.
